Will Trent Be a Defensive Liability at Real Madrid? Nacho Monreal Weighs In

Former Arsenal and Spain defender Nacho Monreal has praised the potential signing of Trent Alexander-Arnold by Real Madrid, calling it a “top-tier move” that could significantly boost Los Blancos — especially with Dani Carvajal currently sidelined.

A High-Impact Transfer

“Arnold is a world-class signing,” Monreal said. “He’s a special player who’s proven his worth over the years at Liverpool. His arrival at Madrid would be a major lift, especially at a time when the team is lacking depth at right-back.”

Defensive Concerns? Not So Fast

While some critics question Trent’s defensive reliability, Monreal was quick to defend him:
“It’s true that his main strength lies in attack, but that doesn’t mean he’s weak defensively — if he was, Liverpool wouldn’t have kept him as a starter for so many seasons.”

He emphasized that Trent’s pinpoint passing and dangerous crosses are what set him apart, but also noted that he’s more solid at the back than many give him credit for.

Arnold vs. Carvajal? A ‘Good Problem’ for Ancelotti

Asked about how Trent and Carvajal might coexist if both are fit, Monreal smiled:
“Having two players of that caliber is a blessing for any coach. It’s a healthy competition that will only strengthen the squad. Sure, it might give Ancelotti a bit of a selection headache — but it’s the kind of problem every manager wants to have.”
