Raphinha responds for the first time to his controversial anti-Argentina comments
Barcelona winger and Brazil international Raphinha has spoken out for the first time about the statements he made ahead of Brazil’s recent World Cup 2026 qualifier against Argentina — a match that ended in a heavy 4-1 defeat for the Seleção.
In a pre-match interview with Brazilian legend Romário, Raphinha made bold and fiery remarks, saying:
“We’re going to beat them, no doubt… on and off the pitch if necessary.”
He also added: “I’ll score against them… to hell with them.”
These statements sparked widespread controversy, drawing heavy criticism and mockery — especially after Brazil’s big loss to their historic rivals.
Following Barcelona’s dominant 4-0 win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday in the Champions League quarter-final first leg, Raphinha was asked for the first time about his remarks.
In an interview with Brazil’s TNT Sports, he replied:
“Maybe the words I used weren’t the best, but my intentions when I wear the national team shirt are absolutely clear.”
He added:
“For me, it’s about defending the shirt and my country… What matters to me is standing up for my team, whether it’s with Brazil or here at Barcelona. And if I have to fight, I’ll fight.”
